...A Rhodes scholar and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Virgil Hancher led the university for a quarter of a century, a period of unprecedented growth for the campus. Trained in the law, Hancher received the B.A. degree in 1919 and the degree of Juris Doctor in 1924 from the University of Iowa. From Oxford University in England, he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in jurisprudence in 1922 and the Master of Arts degree in 1927. Hancher was born on a farm near Rolfe, Iowa, on September 4, 1896. He married Susan Cannon on June 9, 1928. They had three children. Hancher died on January 30, 1965, in New Delhi, India, while serving as a consultant in higher education for the Ford Foundation. He was 68....

...This is one of several sources listed in this collection. STROMBERG POULTRY FARM AND HATCHERY. Records, 1922, 1924-1941. 1.26 linear feet. MS-123. Ernst Sigfred Stromberg (1886-1969) was born in Greenview, Illinois. In 1893 his family moved to Otho, Iowa, and in 1913 Ernst Stromberg married Josephine Anderson. The couple made their home on a farm near Otho until 1925 when they moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, and established the Stromberg Hatchery. Stromberg pioneered the chick hatchery concept in the United States; at one time the Stromberg Hatchery was the largest in the country, with branches in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota; and in Mason City, Marshalltown, Boone, Webster City, Manson, Rolfe, and Lakota, Iowa. Stromberg also ran the Purity Milling Company and developed its formulas for poultry feeds. Collection includes advertising, correspondence, feed tests, financial records, legal documents, and ledgers. It also contains a 1959 letter from Stromberg to his sister Bettie explaining how he went into the hatchery business....

...The new Susan Hancher Garden, constructed by the UI Facilities Services Group with funds contributed by the Hancher family and friends, is located on a walkway from the Hancher parking lot to the lobby entrance of the auditorium. Hancher Auditorium was named in honor of Susan's husband, Rolfe, Iowa native Virgil Hancher -- the UI president whose vision of a unified arts campus was the impetus for the auditorium project. After Virgil Hancher's retirement and death in the mid-1960s, Susan Hancher continued to be an active member of the UI community until her death in 1988. "She was the first lady of the university for 24 years and was ever active and ever enthusiastic about the University of Iowa," Boyd says. "I could always turn to her during the years I was president or provost and she was always willing to undertake any project for the university. She was a very gracious and outgoing person in every respect." ...
