The collection consists of 432 color slides and descriptions of the slide contents documenting the 1956-1959 school years at the Rolfe, Iowa, Community School. Events documented include: the Junior Class Play, the Grand Operetta, the Senior Trip, Spring Band Concert, Senior Class Play, Senior Breakfast, sports, and Homecoming celebrations.
The history of the Rolfe, Iowa schools dates back to 1860 when Rolfe (at its former location three miles northeast of town) hired the first teacher in the county with classes held at the log house of William M. Hait.
The Independent School District of Rolfe was established at the current town location in 1884. Students met in a two-story building made of lumber from the courthouse at Old Rolfe - the original site of the Pocahontas County seat.

Butler (1887 -- 1961) spent most of his life in Iowa. His parents moved to Pocahontas County when he was but a year old. He attended public schools and graduated from high school in Rolfe, Iowa. In 1913, he graduated from Northwestern University as a dentist. His first dental practice was in Chicago. In 1916, Butler sailed for Japan where he became the holder of the seventh license ever issued to practice dentistry in the Imperial Japanese Empire. The following year he left for Siam where he was the dentist by royal appointment to the royal household of King Rama VI. In 1921, Butler married Suma Grenova of Odessa, Russia in Swatow, China. An accident which left him with nerve damage forced him to retire from dentistry. He moved back to Rolfe, Iowa in 1923. There he began a new career as a farmer and banker. Butler was founder, stockholder, director, and president of the Rolfe State Bank. He was active in many fraternal organizations, the Farm Bureau, and the Iowa Bankers Association. A Republican, Butler served as chairman of the Pocahontas County Republican Central Committee. He was also a delegate to the 1952 Republican National Convention. His first elected office was as mayor of Rolfe. From there he went on to serve many terms as both a state representative and senator.... Bruner Dowd was born on August 31, 1924 in Rolfe, Iowa. Dowd died in Los Altos, California on August 19, 1998. In 1941 Dowd earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Iowa State College. In 1943 Dowd enlisted in the United States Navy. She was sent to the University of California at Los Angles to attend Meteorological School and worked as a Naval Weather Forecaster until her discharge in 1947.
Dowd became employed by Sylvania Electrics Products as an electronics technician in 1958. When Sylvania Electrics Products changed to GTE Government Systems, Dowd became the Engineering Section Head. She was later appointed to the position of Engineering Department Manager. Dowd retired from GTE Government Systems in 1986. Dowd specialized in data processing, modeling, and simulation, and software development.
Dowd belonged to the Association of Old Crows (AOC) an organization related to the Electronic Warfare profession. Electronic Warfare (EW) is the art and science of using the electromagnetic spectrum (from direct current to light) for military advantage. Dowd received Certificates of Merit from the AOC in 1980 and 1983, and was awarded the AOC Special Medal in 1988.... Mayor Gary Cullen and librarian Karen Kerns opened the new community center/library with a balloon send-off. The balloons carried postcards telling about the library’s summer reading program and asking whoever found them to mail them back with details of where the cards landed.

The collection contains the reminiscences of Gladys Trimble Leith entitled, "Stories Told by Gladys, 1989" and "Memories of Mom," by Marie Jeffers. The sketches contain the sisters' recollections about their mother Mary Pyle Trimble as well as their own childhood experiences. They also recount intimate details of growing up female on a northwestern Iowa farm-farm chores, health and illness, marriage, childbirth and other humorous incidents. This collection also includes photocopies of letters from Mary Trimble to her grandson about his intention to become a jet pilot and photocopies of family photographs, a brief Pyle family history, and death certificates of various family members.
