Water Saving Tips

  • Economize: Be aware of the amount of water you use, and look for ways to use less. For instance, fill sinks with water instead of letting water run when you wash, shave, brush your teeth, etc.
  • Repair Leaking Faucets: A leaking faucet can waste 100 gallons(or more) of water a week. Check each tap in the house, and replace worn washers or valve seats.
  • Install Water-Saving Devices: Use low-flow shower heads, faucet aerators, or flow restrictors. For older toilets, install a toilet dam or place a weighted plastic jug in your tank.
  • Save Outdoors: Water your lawn only when it needs it. Landscape with plants that require little water.
  • Cooking: Use brush and bowl of water to clean food instead of letting water run. Thaw frozen food in your refrigerator or microwave, not under running water. Reuse water if when you can. For example: when you cook vegetable, save cooking water for soup stock.
  • Flushing Toilet: Don’t use the toilet to dispose of trash. Also, consider installing a low-flow toilet. (Look for a toilet with a WaterSense label on it.)
  • Dishwashing: When using a dishwasher, wash full loads only. When handwashing, scrape dishes, soak pots and pans before washing. Don’t run water continuously. Limit your use of garbage disposal.
